Functional divergence from ecological baselines on Caribbean coral reefs

چکیده

Understanding how emergent ecological assemblages have diverged from natural states is fundamental in predicting future functioning and services of ecosystems. Coral reefs are particular concern due to their high susceptibility anthropogenic stressors. Yet, little known about pre-disturbance ranges states, most reports decline based on a limited number sites levels uncertainty. Here, we used novel approach estimate the physical functionality across marine ecoregions habitat suitability morpho-functional traits for coral species. We calibrated niche models 49 reef-building corals Greater Caribbean occurrence records environmental predictors, which combined with species-specific functional coefficients derived reflecting contribution reef three-dimensional structure potential (RFP). then assessed degree divergence western by comparing our estimates against recent field data evaluations. found spatial variability RFP Caribbean, highest mean value lowest areas marginal conditions. Hotspots exist along coast Belize southeast Cuba. Overall, 84% showed substantial reduction functioning, reductions occurring within hotspots, implying that displaying greatest changes initial RFP. conclude combining species valuable promising large-scale communities change absence baselines. These findings important implications could be guide efforts preserve define priority conservation Caribbean.

Coral diseases and bleaching on Colombian Caribbean coral reefs.

Since 1998 the National Monitoring System for the Coral Reefs of Colombia (SIMAC) has monitored the occurrence of coral bleaching and diseases in some Colombian coral reefs (permanent stations at San Andres Island, Rosario Islands, Tayrona, San Bernardo Islands and Urabá). The main purpose is to evaluate their health status and to understand the factors that have been contributing to their decl...

Local Stressors, Resilience, and Shifting Baselines on Coral Reefs

Understanding how and why coral reefs have changed over the last twenty to thirty years is crucial for sustaining coral-reef resilience. We used a historical baseline from Kosrae, a typical small island in Micronesia, to examine changes in fish and coral assemblages since 1986. We found that natural gradients in the spatial distribution of fish and coral assemblages have become amplified, as is...

Shifting Baselines, Local Impacts, and Global Change on Coral Reefs

I magine trying to understand the ecology of tropical rainforests by studying environmental changes and interactions among the surviving plants and animals on a vast cattle ranch in the center of a deforested Amazon, without any basic data on how the forest worked before it was cleared and burned. The soil would be baked dry or eroded away and the amount of rainfall would be greatly decreased. ...

Can biological invasions save Caribbean coral reefs?

It is widely accepted that coral reefs are in decline globally, due to climate change as well as more direct human impacts such as poor water quality and overharvesting [1-3]. Biological invasions are also seen as a major threat [4-6]; however, they may not all be negative. An invasion of Red Sea rabbitfishes is disrupting Mediterranean ecosystems by removing macro-algae - meanwhile, in contras...
